Responsibilities: Perform and keep records on routine established analytical procedures using basic laboratory techniques and equipment after proper instruction. The Laboratory Technician works under frequent supervision performing standardized assays and tests. Instructions are well defined, either written or oral, although they may be quite detailed. A wide variety of common laboratory equipment may be employed from one section to another, but they do not generally require advanced technical knowledge. Speed and accuracy are generally more important than analytical understanding. It is equally important to accurately read and record results. The Laboratory Technician is responsible for performing and documenting quality assurance measurements for those materials, equipment, and work surfaces used on a routine basis. He or she is also responsible for sanitizing or sanitary disposal of any equipment, materials, and work surfaces used throughout the course of the day’s work. Daily work activities includes setting up instruments and supplies, sample preparation, diluting and dispensing of samples, reading and recording of results, cleaning up / sanitizing of work area and performing other duties as assigned. The Laboratory Technician carries out assignments in an efficient, safe, and scientifically sound manner and performs in accordance with Department Operating Procedures. Position may require weekend rotations and/or holiday work as workload demands.

1) Develop and achieve Research Microbiology project revenue targets by maintaining significant client base and generating new projects through frequent and consistent client interaction.
2) Expand personal network of existing professional contacts in the food industry through participation and attendance at professional symposia and meetings.
3) Provide consulting services to clients in the areas of process evaluation, process efficacy, preservation efficacy, food safety, and food microbiology.
4) Present high quality research project proposals/quotes to clients in a prompt manner; includes development of experimental designs and relevant new methods.
5) Direct a staff of 6 to 10 full-time and part-time scientists in the implementation of contract research projects, microbial genetics and special biological/microbiological testing.
6) Prepare high quality research project and consulting reports to clients in a timely manner.

Requirements:

  • Advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in Food Science/Food Microbiology with research emphasis in food microbiology and food safety.
  • Candidates will have a minimum of 3 years food industry experience in quality assurance and/or research & development with a wide range of food products.
  • Candidate must have a working knowledge of food regulations (USDA and FDA), HACCP, Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs), and current microbiological methods.
  • Research experience in applied food microbiology, food processing and food safety including microbial challenge, process validation, and antimicrobial efficacy studies. Experience in thermal processing of foods is highly desirable.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; Demonstrated expertise in food safety, applied food microbiology, and technical writing (i.e. peer reviewed publications).
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and customer service skills.
  • Experience in writing contract research proposals/grants is preferred.
